What you really want

What is it that gets us up and out of bed in the morning? It’s a timely question now that it is cold out.

For us, the question is the more urgent, and not simply because it’s even colder out. It’s because here is Jesus every day already ahead of us, actively seeking us out, as St Benedict says in his prologue to the Rule (vv. 14-20) calling us, not for the first time, but “again”: Is there anyone here who yearns for life and desires to see good days?

So every day, every morning, immediately, relentlessly, lovingly, we are faced with this most important question, the one that Jesus asks over and over again in the Gospels by his presence — What is it that you really want?
