Julianfest is an old tradition in The Order of Julian of Norwich — in fact, it is even a little older than the community itself! JulianFest began in Norwich, Connecticut (OJN’s birth-place) in 1982, and over the years speakers from three continents and crowds of over two hundred people have attended. Eventually, JulianFest as a weekend open to the public became too expensive, and the annual JulianFest was turned into more of an OJN family reunion, dedicated entirely to OJN affiliates, their families, and their friends.
Every year the speakers offer something different, from very ‘episcopal’ talks about the Church to more free-flowing explorations of the life of prayer. The emphasis throughout remains, however, on Blessed Mother Julian herself and on the contemplative life that we share as monastics, oblates, and associates.
In 2008 we were especially fortunate to have with us The Rev. Paula Barker of Seabury Seminary as our keynote speaker. Fr. Gregory, the Guardian of the Order, preached on Sunday, and Brenda Weems, an oblate, preached on Sunday. Also with us was a musical group called Little Windows, made up of Mark Weems and Julee Glaub, who offered their musical gifts to the weekend. Karen Beaumont, associate of the Order, gave an inspiring organ concert at St. Anskar’s Church in Hartland, Wisconsin.
